About Pilu: who builds it, and why

Pilu is a baby monitor app for iPhone and Android that keeps everything at home: two devices, one direct, end-to-end encrypted connection over your own Wi-Fi — no cloud, no account, no recording. It is built and published by Deep Platforms GmbH, a software company in Gröbenzell near Munich, Germany.

Why Pilu exists

Most baby monitor apps route the picture of a sleeping child through servers somewhere on the internet, tie it to an account and bill it as a subscription. We found that a strange thing to accept as normal for a device that spends every night in a nursery. Technically, none of it is necessary: two phones on the same network can talk to each other directly.

So we built the baby monitor we wanted for our own family — one whose privacy is a property of its architecture rather than a promise in a policy. If there is no server, nothing can leak from it. If there is no account, nothing can be breached. If nothing is recorded, nothing can be sold.

The principles behind the app

  • Local only. Video and audio travel from device to device through your Wi-Fi, or through the small network Pilu creates on the road. There is no Pilu server anything could be sent to.
  • Trustworthy silence. Green in Pilu means the connection is provably fresh and the nursery is genuinely quiet. If the connection dies, a loud alarm overrides silent mode and Do Not Disturb — a baby monitor that dies quietly isn't one.
  • Audio before video. When Wi-Fi gets weak, the picture goes first and the sound never.
  • Honest limits. Pilu cannot show you a live stream from the office, and it never records. We say so on every page rather than hiding it in the fine print.
  • Fair pricing. Audio monitoring with every alarm is free for good. The picture comes as Pilu Full — monthly, yearly with a free week, or once for forever — and one purchase covers both devices of a household.

How we write our comparisons

Pilu is our own product, and our comparison articles say so in the first sentence. Everything we state about other apps comes from their own descriptions and pricing pages, with the date we checked, and we describe their real strengths — including the situations in which a cloud app is the better choice and Pilu is not. We don't publish ratings we haven't earned, we don't run affiliate links, and we correct mistakes when readers point them out.
