Turn two phones into a baby monitor — in two minutes, no account

September 1, 2026 · 3 min read

Almost every drawer holds a retired smartphone. Together with your current phone, it's everything you need for a full baby monitor — with video, noise alerts, and an alarm that actually wakes you.

What you need

Setup in two taps

  1. **Pick roles.» Open Pilu on both devices. On the nursery device tap "With the baby", on yours tap "With you". On the nursery device you decide once: video and audio, or audio only (saves a lot of battery).
  2. Scan the QR code. The nursery device shows a QR code. Scan it with your device — inside the Pilu app, not with the camera app. Done: video and audio are running, encrypted, straight from device to device.

The QR code is more than a shortcut: it carries a cryptographic fingerprint of the nursery device. Your device connects to exactly that counterpart and nothing else — nobody else on the Wi-Fi can reach the stream.

From the second time on there's no scanning at all: open the app, tap start, the devices find each other again.

The first night

On the road: hotels, camping, grandma's

No trustworthy Wi-Fi around? An Android device can create its own small network at the tap of a button — no internet, random password. The second device joins via QR code, and everything works like at home. (Two iPhones without a SIM can't do this — an Android device has to provide the network; the app tells you clearly instead of failing silently.)

Three honest notes

  1. Range is Wi-Fi range. Two or three walls are fine on 2.4 GHz — a reinforced-concrete holiday house may set limits. The app tells you honestly when the connection gets thin.
  2. A baby monitor doesn't replace supervision. It extends your ear into the next room — no more than that, and that goes for every baby monitor.
  3. Old devices age. A seven-year-old phone with a swollen battery doesn't belong on a charger under a crib. A solid device from recent years is perfect.

Two devices, two taps, no cloud in between — that's all a baby monitor needs.
